Problem with selectric shift

I need some help please. I have an Evinrude, 1962 Lark 4 selectric shift motor, model # 35933. Today, I lost my forward gear. It started jumping in and out of gear then finalyy would not go back into gear. I applied 12 v. power to the green and the blue wire at the back of the engine. At the blue wire, I can spin the prop in one direction (counter clock wise). When applying the power to the green wire, I can hand spin the prop both ways as though it is in neutral.

When the forward gear quit on me, I still had neutral and reverse had no problems ( I came in to the dock in reverse for three miles out). I am assuming the electromagnetic coil in the bottom of the engine is shot, or at least the wire is shot somewhere in the engine that I cannot see. I have two questions that I would like an answer for if anyone knows:

1) Are the parts that I need available any where?

2) Can I switch the electromagnets around in the lower unit so I will have forward but no reverse if I cannot get the part I need?

I do not know if the electromagnets for forward and reverse are typical with each other or not, but I can live with no reverse if I have to. The only time I need it is to back away from the dock, and I can use my kicker motor for that. Any help at all would really be apprecited guys. Thanks!

Re: Problem with selectric shift

Both the front and rear shift coils are still available. They are different.
The shift springs are the same for forward and reverse and are still available.
Check the coils' resistance (using a meter) before you tear into anything.

The clutch springs themselves can be a bit pricey. If you determine that you need one, you may find a trashed, but complete, lower unit for a lower price. It is unlikely that both forward and reverse springs would be bad in the same used lower unit.

Thanks for letting me know that the parts are still available, however, I cannot find them anywhere. Can you let me know where to get them at? I cannot find them locally no ron line anywhere I looked. I sure would appreciate it if you would let me know. Thanks.

I will definately look around for a lower unit, but I'm afraid it will be hard to find one. If you know where I can get the parts, I sure would appreciate it if you could pass that info on to me as I looked locally and on line and I cannot find any where that I can order the parts from. Thanks.

Re: Problem with selectric shift

Whaler, Just to keep you posted. I could not locate a ued lower unit anywhere at any of the slavage yards for boats around here. I found the spring and coil though. The spring is $217 and the coil is $325. OUCH! I don't know which one or both that I need, but it's probably the electro magnet as I got zero resistance on the forward (renn wire). Hopefully, I'll find a broken green wire when I get into it. That would be the easiest, cheapest fix I guess.

Hi yorab,
I found the springs. They run $217. The coils run $325. Both are quite high. Hopefully I will find a broken bad wire when I get into it. I have zero resistance on the green (forward) wire at the back of the engine.

For comparison purposes, what's the resistance on the blue wire ??

marineengine.com is cheaper than that.
0-ohms usually means a pinched (shorted) coil wire.

The blue wire I got a reading of 6.7, and the green wire I got 'zero'. I am still hoping that the wire is bad instead of the coil!

Whaler,

I went on line , got the number for marine engine and spoke to Eric there. He has the coil and the spring in stock. It was a heck of a lot cheaper. The coil is $125 there (as opposed to $325 that I had before) and the spring was not listed with a price, but he assured me it was less than $100. As soon as I am certain what I need, I definately will be ordering from them. Thanks for the reccomendation!! Saved me plenty.

By the way, for anyone else that has this same problem: I found out the the springs are interchangable from forward to reverse gears, however, the electro magnets are not. The forward gear magnet has more wire in the windings than the reverse, so I was informed that you can use the forward magnet for reverse gear if that's all you can find, BUT you CANNOT use the reverse gear magnet on the forward gear. It won't be strong enough.

Re: Problem with selectric shift

UPDATE: I tore my motor apart, and found the electro magnet was eaten up terribly. The covering on it was gone and wires were exposed and frayed. The clutch hub (the shaft the spring goes over and the hub covers the magnet) was torn up too, looked much like a tiny break rotor on disc breaks on a car, and it is gone! I ordered the electro magnet, the clutch hub. and while I'm at it, i am replacing the water impeller and I also needed the impeller housing which is cracked on the inside where the rubber hit against the metal. two out of the 6 vanes on the impeller are gone, and another one was facing the wrong way, so 3 out of 6 were not working right. Housing will take a few weeks to get. It's on back order. Nobody has any in stock for this old motor. Cost of repairs will be about $500 for parts. I hope it's worth it! Motor runs fantastic.

Better find those two impeller vanes that were gone or you could have an overheat prob in the future.
