most 1987 use 3w motors with a perfectly round cable coming out of side. Some use a 2w motor with a flat cable coming out of top. If 3w then connect black wire to battery ground and touch blue wire to positive. If it does not lift then your pump is bad.

can I do that with the 2w motor .I did jump the blue for a second and it did raise a bit ,but I tried it again and nothin. My starter relay is no good ,I pulled on the the wire and the terminal broke off .So another part to the list. I found a used one and the guy wants $40 for it .

if a hot wired motor doesn't spin then it needs rebuilding. If you take it to a local auto starter shop make it clear that you want all internal rust removed. You could also check ebay for an off-the-shelf rebuild. You send your old one back after swapping out.

If you got the pump motor to run one time during your test then it could be good. Make sure your batt is charged and your connection to the batt term is good when you are testing. If it functions then check all your wiring and switch to the pump motor. If still nothing happens then take it in to the shop as recommended in the previous post.

Re: problem with tilt/trim

This might be a stupid question but does the starter relay have anything to do with the t/t?

Re: problem with tilt/trim

Are you talking about your starter solenoid? The two relays on my 1990 Force 120 are for the tilt/trim motor, for up and down. The tilt trim shouldn?t have anything to do with the solenoid other than the positive post sharing common + batt voltage with the relay coil on the t/t relays. When tilting up blue is + and green is -, when tilting down green is + and blue is -. This is on my 120, yours may be different.

The reason I'm asking is because when I was checking the wires ,I gave the positive wire a tug and the pos post on the starter selenoid came off,so the cables are connected just not to the selenoid.thought that might have been part of my prob

If the post broke off then you wont have a good connection to the positive of your system, from batt to relay positive. Make sure the pump motor breaker is reset and functional. This is located in between the solenoid and the relays. Connect the positive from the battery to the input (battery side) on the pump motor breaker using a set of battery jumper cables(make sure it is a good connection). Then test the up and down. If it does not work then test the breaker to make sure it is good.

Post if this does not work there are further steps you can take to test.

Hot wire the motor. if the motor does not spin it is bad. if your motor does spin but your system does not work then it is the hydraulics. If the motor spins and everything works correctly then it is wiring.

If you are sure your circuit is complete and good and the unit is still not functioning then you should go directly to the battery with your pump motor wires. Post what happens.

Re: problem with tilt/trim

it's works! I held the switch in up position for about 20 sec or so then it raised , maybe something stuck .I don't know but it works for now. Thanks for all the info it really helped me pinpoint and weed out possible probs. So I think mainly the problem was a corroded fuse holder and from sittin all winter. Thanks again.Circuit tester a major plus to have.

Re: problem with tilt/trim

Intermittent problems are always electric. If it acts up again then you know to focus on the electrical side.

Next time it acts up, check voltage going into motor. If motor gets voltage but intermittently spins then you probably getting water or oil inside of it. The brushes never wear out. The seals go bad and the innards get ruined. The faster you fix this kind of problem the less it will cost.

If you are not getting voltage at motor then backtrack to next connection upstream. Keep going one link at a time until you arrive at the bad connection.

Re: problem with tilt/trim

Where are the tilt/trim solenoids or relays located on a Force 150 are they somewhere on the engine or would they be located in the boat?
