my problem occured at the end of last season and the boats going in later this month so i figured i better address it now. i used the seafoam decarbing method mentioned many times on this site. after smoking out the neighborhood, i changed plugs and ran the boat for about an hour. it ran very poorly. coughing and spuddering. i figured it must be deposits on the plugs, so i replaced plugs again - it didnt help. im my final trip to the marina ( for pull out ) it ran even worse. when i gave it gas, it bogged down and would stall out. the motor is a 1991 force 120hp. could anything else be plugged? any help is greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem with my 1990 johnson 120 last year. Turns out, my fuel recirculation valves were clogged with carbon. That situation prevents the draining of fuel back to the cylinders. I don't know how your force is set up but may be an idea to get you started.

I agree with alden, fuel recirc system needs a cleaning.

2 different recirculating systems were used in 1991, depending on what parts were available at the factory.

Your best bet is to get a Clymer Force repair manual, and refer to the photos on pages 232, 233, and 234.

The system consists of a few small fittings, check valves, and hoses, which collect unused fuel, and recirculate it back into the manifold to be used.

The fittings and check valves need to be removed and cleaned, along with the hoses. Occasionally you need to replace a hose or check valve if you cannot get it cleaned out.

Check out these two links, it will give you an idea of what we are talking about.
