Ok so the motor is what I believe to be a mid 80s 30-35 hp. I cant determine that because there is no tag on the motor and the water jacket on the block has also been replaced with no numbers on it......The motor is a little bigger and heavier than my 25 hp and the exhaust comes through the prop and on my 25 it doesnt.... the lower unit is held on by 4 bolts and one nut. I get it apart like 1/2 inch but I cant figure how to disconnect the shifter linkage.... It doesnt have a window on the side like the 20 and 25 hp motors.

Pull the water intake screens off after removing the 2 screws, now you'll see the shift rod linkage. You have to take out the bolts and the little black plastic "keepers" off the rod before you can disconnect it. They don't look like it, but they are split so you can just pull them off the shaft by gently spreading them. DON'T lose those tiny black keepers----they're super small and easy to lose!
Good luck,
