Problems getting boat in gear

I have a 2001 Glastron 175, with a Volvo 3.0 litre/penta outdrive (and volvo throttle).

The throttle has a button that you push to put it in neutral. Most of the time, when I put the throttle back to vertical, it snaps back into gear the way it should. However, occasionally, I have a lot of trouble getting the throttle to snap into gear, and it is stuck in neutral for a bit. On these occasions, after shaking the throttle for a minute while it is vertical gets it to snap back. So far, it hasn't been a big deal - but if I end up getting stuck in neutral at the wrong time, it could end up being a big deal.

Has anyone else run into this? It feels like there is just a spring somewhere in the throttle that needs some oil. However, I don't have the manual for the throttle, and figured I would bounce it off this board before I start taking it apart...

Thanks for any thoughts or info!

Re: Problems getting boat in gear

I have some knowledge of VP, and it could be any number of things, but the two most obvious things to check are idle speed- too fast and it won't shift smoothly, and shift cable adjustment. I don't have the ablilty to tell you how to adjust it, but maybe someone else here can help.

try spraying some wd 40 around the button, sounds corroded or gunked up, and is sticking, and not popping out.
