I posted last week about motor trouble. This is a 1996 48 spl. The motor would not shift and excess vibration(after hitting a stump pretty hard). Well, I took it to the mechanic and guess what? The bolts that hold the motor to the bracket are torn out!!!! This had the shift rod in a bind and let it vibrate a LOT. The mechanic said to get to the bolts you have to pull the power head?????? They are the ones right at the top of the motor where the tiller handle goes back to the motor. You can see one of the bolts just lying in there trought the very small gap. He said that the new part where the bolts screw in is only like $18 (thinks the part had the threads ripped out when it hit the stump)but I will have considerable labor charges to pull the heads to put the part in and screw the bolts in. I hope that this is the only thing that is wrong. I LOVE IT......

thanks
longshot

As long as you have the engine down that far, I would go a step further and measure the exhaust housing for straightness. When you strike a solid object that hard, you could well have a sprung the housing, or gear case.
