I am not sure where this belongs. I am new to the forums and trying to get this boat up and running. I have been given a boat. It is a chaparral boat. I am not sure of the year. I have noticed a few things while I am working on the boat. I am not sure of what brand motor it is and what hp it is. It is an outboard motor. The motor tilts electronically just fine. I noticed that it does not turn left or right. I disconnected the steering cable thinking that might be the problem. the cable moves just fine with the steering wheel. The motor still does not move left or right. Is there any idea how to move it or what might be the problem? Thanks

Re: Problems not sure how to fix

Add a lot of pictures, there should be a name plate and S/N someplace on the motor or the mount

check and see if the motor has some type of lock to keep it from turning during transport

Does the motor not turn at all, or does it move a little then stop?

It won't turn left or right at all. I have not noticed any locks holding the motor in place during the transport. I am not sure what to do. I will try and get pics up. I haven't found any type of name plate or anything.

Post a picture of the motor. Somebody will know what it is by the looks of it. I bet it's locked somehow

Re: Problems not sure how to fix

alright well I got a little more info. Sorry no pics yet. The boat is a chaparral 162, I am not sure of the year so if you can help me out that would be great. The motor is a Johnson VRO V4. The model number is J90TLCOS. It is 90 HP. I am not sure I talked to the the guy who had it last and he said that it had a 115 I am not sure what the case is. So I have deduced some of the problem I think. The boat is motor won't turn left or right. I looked at it and there is a shaft that is right above the transum (SP). It is covered on the outside with grease. The shaft runs to the steering cable. The shaft is what I believe to be the problem. Any help on that? Also the the nut on the steering cable that connects to the shaft appears to be stripped out does that mean I need a new steering cable? How much do you think it would cost to fix all this. Thanks
