Problems Selling the Old Boat

My wife was slow to adopt boating but has finally gotten the bug. It started last year when I made her take a boating class and then I forced her to learn to drive the boat. Once she started driving the boat it got interesting. Now she has the bug and loves to drive around at WOT etc.

Yesterday she decides our current boat is to small and we need to sell it or trade it in for a bigger boat. I bought our current boat in 09. It is an 03 Four Winns Freedom 170. It was not in the best shape when we got it. Over the last few years I have fixed everything myself and made several improvements. There is not an inch of the boat that I have not been through. I know everything on the boat and everything works.

Here is the problem. I don't want to buy a brand new boat due to the price. I am really concerned about buying used because I just got everything right in current boat and I hate to start again. To be the honest I also don't want to sell my boat to someone who will not take care of it and treat her right. I put a lot of hard work and TLC in her and the thought of someone getting her and then letting her go to pieces really bothers me.

Am I being weird. Most people would jump on the chance to get a new boat and I do agree a larger boat is good but it seems like I juts got our current boat where everything works, she is reliable as the day is long and I just installed a new stereo system over the winter. I have more $ in her than I will ever get back so I figure use her at least another year. Am I crazy?

Well... once you've had enough of the wife complaining about the 'now too small' boat you'll likely come to your senses.

I think that you assume that the next owner won't be a dilligent one. That may not be the case. You need to remove your emotional attachment to they boat and get to the business of upgrading if you are serious. Look, my first house was upgraded and remodeled by us well beyond the rest of the neighborhood, we loved it but it was too small. Wouldn't you know it when we sold it some parents bought it for their dirtball daughter and her bigger dirtball boyfriend and large dogs and beat the crap out of it. Sure it stung a bit but you move onward and updard. As for jumping at the chance for a brand new boat, I'd disagree. I'd jump at the chance to get a 2 year old, nearly new boat that is severely depreciated. What type of improvements have you made to a contemporary design, practically new 10 year old boat?

What you have going for yourself is that your boat has an O/B which is rare in a 2000's bowrider. I bet I see 30 I/O, newer bowriders to 1 OB and that I think that is generous. A 17 footer is a bit smallish sure but for just the two of you?? Did your wife take a ride on a larger boat to all of the sudden come to the conclusion that it is too small?

He's on the coast. 40 outboards for every I/O

That statement should be enough to tell you to buy new. I hemmed and hawed about it for the longest (2 restores) time and finally took the leap. I couldn't be happier. A three or four hundred a month payment seems like nothing compared to what I was spending on all the restorations I did. I also have the boat in the water a lot more and can enjoy my time on the water with a lot less thinking about what I need to fix or maybe didn't fix right.

Agree with a lot more time on the water. How much new bowrider can you get you get for three or four hundred a month? Funny how when you add up your nickel and dime purchases it makes more sense to start over.

Here is one solution. why not get the wife a jet ski and let her get the need for speed out of her system. Or maybe a river tube would slow her down some.

a. don't think twice about what the next owner does. It's not like your great uncle's hand-built wooden sailboat (BTDT) it's a generic boat.

b..You never ever get back what you put in it. all you do is maintain the price you paid for it. At that.

c. don't buy new new. buy almost new.

d. i understand about not buying someone else's trouble. That's why I stubbornly fix old stuff instead of buying a replacement. But that does not apply to you--you are trading up. Not the same thought process at all.

e. The monkey doesn't let go of a branch until he has his hands on the next one. Boating season has started. get your new one then sell the old one. even if you found a new one today it would be a couple weeks beforr you're out in it.

f. When you sell the old one, always take the first offer.

Since you have a boat that works take your time and find exactly what you want. I decided to upgrade and found a 4 year old model with only 70 hours that was just like new and lake ready for 20,000 less than new list. I sold my old one and never looked back.

My previous boat was my baby, I spent LOTS of hours working on her, making it perfect. The instant the check cleared the bank, any emotion attachment is gone. She is now unfortunately sitting the weeds, with a broken engine. She may never see water again.

Yea thats why they hide the parts dept way in the back so you have to walk by the new ones.

Wait until your wife goes away for the weekend and then paint your boat, when she comes back ask her how she likes the new boat.

... or, if you really want to make her happy... a 21' Bullit bass boat with a 300 hp Merc on the back should give her all the speed she'll ever need.
