1986 Malibu Skier 5.7 Mercruiser...still has points...Boat will start and run sometimes as normal. Other times it will crank and fire, but seems as if it is only burning what gas is in the carb and then dies. If you let it sit for a while, most of the time it will start and idle but not always. Sometimes it will idle normally for a while and then just shut off without any sputter. The fuel pump appears to be working properly. Boat recently had overheating problems as well, might they be related in some sort of way?

Have you checked the fuel filter in the carburator? It's located behind the big nut where the fuel line connects to the carb.
