Re: problems starting aq120/270

Test went ok. Boat ran decent but overheating. There was debris in the fresh water side causing a blockage. I seem to have that all cleaned out. Going for another test first thing in the morning. Took some of the pieces of metal I have been finding in the distributor to the local marina. Mechanic said its pieces of a spring. Siad the boat will run without it but wont advance time correct. So it looks like I have another issue to deal with!

Don't wait to long, you can damage an engine running at the wrong timing.

How long do you think I have in running hours? Machanic said it would be fine for rest of season! He said it will just run at base time!

Don, Where might I find the part numbers for the springs inside the distributor? I plan to change them all since I'm going into it anyway. How about part numbers for an exaust tube and and exause bellows?

Thanks in advance!

Re: problems starting aq120/270

So I bought a used distributor instead of changing the springs. The used one looks great and I can visibly see the springs inside it. I have removed the old one and installed the new one. I plan to test once I get my other issue fixed. (different thread) I did take the old one apart just to look inside and there and no springs at all. Just a bunch of little pieces of them left. Its Amazing I ever got that thing to run. Is it worth trying to buy new springs and save it or just dump it? Its in good shape and other than the springs being gone seems to be salvagable. Advice plz.

Yes I did set them to the post #6. However I have a manual that says .016 to .018 and it seems to run much better somewhere in the middle. Howver I was going over each wire and seemed to find a bare one that was clicking. Would that cause my problems? Would that make the points go out of setting?

I had the smae problem, so I decided to convert to electronic iginiton. I have not had a problem since. I used the Pertronix Iginitor and a new 3ohm Flamethrower coil. the Pertronix Part number I do believe is the 2842. Cost was 83 for the ignitor and 32 for the coil.

May the waves be at your mercy.
