Problems w old Rude

Hello, its been awhile since I have posted here. Situation: 1959 35HP Evinrude. Model 35516. Was running way to rich and found out float was bad. Replaced float and plugs. Got running, it would run fine at higher rpm. at idle would sputter. Replaced fuel with fresh mix. Ran fine in tank and on first leg of trip at lake today. ON startup to return to dock it would sputter again as if it was lean. Adjusted HI & Low needle valves per Clymer manuals. Pulled plugs out and they were coal black. Not wet at all. I suspect fuel pump? Any ideas. Thanks in advance.

Hi, Terry.<br /><br />"Sputtering" is how people often describe what I call "four cycling".<br /><br />Four cycling is caused by an over-rich condition. That could be adjustments, or it could be a float set slightly too high.<br /><br />Just a thought.

Replaced TStat, think may have had to much oil in mix. Thinned a little and seemed to run a little better. Still runs a little rough at idle. Pulled both plugs again. Top one still black, bottom one black and slightly wet. Bottom not getting spark? I will check. Thanks for your response

Did you replace the carb bowl & boss gasket? The boss gasket is the one that goes around the brass pick-up tube. If you did not, this will cause an air leak, and engine will not idle properly

Hello All, well SUCCESS!! Found out the problems were air leaks. I suspect the main one was the gasket was bad btwn the Carb & INtake. Replaced gasket, redid carb{cleaned,aligned float} (again!) replaced a bunch of the original wire hose clamps with new clamps. Started up adjusted low & high speed mix and runs like a champ (or Evinrude!) Thanks for all your help folks..

I'm on vaca in Maine and my cousin has the same motor. We tried to get the boat going this past weekend and it wouldn't turn over. Gas is pouring out of the front of the carb body where the choke flaps are. Obviously the float is having an issue. Two questions

First, how likely are the old cork floats to go bad? I say they can go bad as much as any float, he seems to think it is something else.

Second, where can I get an online diagram to see how the float needle fits on the tang of the float? The little pin around the needle seems to be twisted like a twist tie to make a small circle and we can't for the life of us figure out where it attaches. I'm used to the springs that slide over the tang like a hanger. This one definitely does not do that.

My opinion is get a hold of a kit and replace all gaskets, float and float needle. Clean out all orifices and ports then see what happens. It was running like a champ for him last week. The carb is clean from what we can see in the float bowl. Gas is brand new.
