I was not getting a good flow of water and the buzzer going off so pulled the lower unit off to change impeller and found that about 10" down from the top of the shaft (the beveled portion) there were gouges out of the shaft about every 1/4" around this portion. I can't figure out what would have done this at this location. Any ideas? I found no metal in oil or on the lower unit. I sanded this down to get the rough areas off, but need to know if there is something else I need to fix.

Maybe someone use a pair of pliers or vise grips to twist the shaft at some point in time?

Yeah, I would have thought that too, but since I am the original owner I know that is not the case. This is actually the first time the lower unit has been removed...the motor only has about 100 hrs on it...my recreation time is limited. I just can't figure what could have made the marks, because it does look like a visegrip had a hold of it.

Wow, thanks, I thought it was very strange to have these markings at this location on the shaft. From best I can tell, there should be nothing at that location to make these gouges. I'm putting it back together and pretending they aren't there.
