Hey guys, I have a Minn Kota 30lb thrust 12V transom mount trolling motor and have lately been having issues with it. I took it out a while back and it ran like a champ and then all of a sudden it just started slowing down and ultimately died. I tested the battery and it was fine, so I took it home and left it in the garage for a while.

I opened it up last night and all seemed to be OK. There wasn't any corrosion or anything, and all of the wires and the inside were in excellent like-new condition. I took off the prop and it had a little bit of fishing line wound around it, but I just pulled it off and figured it wasn't a big deal. When I hooked it up to my charged battery (confirmed 12V with volt meter), it ran for about 10 seconds, then started slowing down again and just cut off. It does the same thing in reverse and forward, in all gears.

My only thought was that maybe the fishing line that was wound around the prop caused the motor to overheat and burn out. Is there anything else I should check before just buying another one? I don't want to put too much money into it because I can buy another 30lb Minn Kota brand new for under $100. Thanks...

Yes -- try a different battery. Hook it up to your car battery. Just because the battery measures 12V, does not mean its capable of holding a charge. The fact that it runs for a bit and then begins to slow down tells me you have a failing or failed battery. This is a deep cycle battery we are talking about -- isn't it?

Yes, initially I was trying it on a marine/RV deep cycle 12 volt battery. I tried it on a different automotive battery (also tested at 12V) that I have lying around and it also did the same thing.

If that fishing line has been on there a while it possible it damaged the seal and you are getting water inside the motor.
