Problems with Honda 100 10 hp 4 stroke

My reliable Honda 100 has developed an intermittent problem. It will occasionally not start and run unless the choke is pulled out.
The minute the choke is pushed in it dies.
Last time out we completely removed the metering adjustment from the carburator and put it back in to the approximate place it was and got the motor to start normally and it ran but would not run at low rpm. More adjustment of the metering screw and some minor tweaking of the idle adjustment allowed us to fish the whole day but by the end of the day it began to run roughly again at low rpm. I feel the carb needs work but have no idea where to get a kit or what I should do to go thru it. This is normally a very reliable motor.
Any help is appreciated

Re: Problems with Honda 100 10 hp 4 stroke

Hi George
To have to use the choke to get the motor to run usually indecates fuel starvation. This could be caused by sucking air threw a bad fuel hose or conector. Could be the tank is not vented or the pick-up tube screen fouled. Might want to check the fuel pump and of course the carb and fuel filter. As far as manuals go check out the bottom of the page. I ordered mine from my dealer some years back. You may want to do the same, this will give you a chance to get to know them. The older your motor gets the more you'll need this guy to help keep your motor dependable.

Thanks alcan I'll take your suggestions under advisement. I worked on the problem today and removed the carb. I cleaned it thoroughly and reinstalled it. I also found the gas tank to be quite dirty and even found some signs of a little water in the tank. I poured the tank empty through a white filter cloth three times until I got no debris at all. After this I ran the motor on the hose and adjusted the carb and it seemed to run smoothly so we'll see next time out.

Thanks, George Nochta
