Hey all,<br />I've got a 1985 40hp Mariner. It's up for the winter now, but the last time it was out, I noticed only a slow dribble out of the "peehole". From what I gather, this probably indicates the need for a new impeller.<br /><br />Could it be anything else? Where is the best place to pick up an impeller? Also, does anyone know if this is a paticular model of outboard, or is the year & hp enough to find the right part? <br /><br />Once I get the part and a manual, I'll be asking questions on how the heck to do it! ;) Any input is helpfull. <br />Thanks,<br />Chris

What is your S/N and no of cyls? If you have a pressure gauge, it should be pushing around 6psi at WOT. If not, and the impeller hasn't been replaced for a few seasons, it's time to fit an impeller kit (impeller, steel base plate, and gaskets)<br />Some kits fit a range of motors, but you need to cross ref your S/N with a site like <br /> http://www.nicksoutboardmarine.com/catalogpg449.html <br />The job is straight forward and the iboaters will guide you if you get stuck.<br /> http://www.diy-boat.com/Pages/Archives/links/eng982.html

I recently replaced a water pump in one of my spare merc's which was 70hp.The kit which you can buy or order from any boat or parts dealer. Make sure you take all the info you have on that motor with you! Mine was round 50 bucks for everything to get the job done. I also strongly suggest to pick a manual for that outboard which it will show you step by step on how to do it right!. Its also handy if you have availability to a air compresser to blow out any unwanted crap that might be hanging out in there. Its not all that difficult! Just a few patience here and there and she be right mate!! Good luck!

Yeah, definately give it a shot of some air before you go do the impellor job. I bought a kicker with the same problem. I was going to do the impellor deal and my mechanic just shot some air with the air compress and that cleared it rite up.

With mine once every 6 months it gets a bit weaker. First I though prostate problems... only kidding. It the engine isn't overheating, it probably a bit of dirt in the tell-tale system. Just get it warm on the hose flusher, stop the engine, remove the telltale pipe from the side of the engine and shoot the hose into it full blast.

I've done that couple of times on my 200 merc and cleared the problem. It must push the stuff out the lower end drain.

UPDATE!!!<br />Big308 wins the prize. Took the hose off and there was a blockage at the pee hole. Used a syringe full of water to force it out and ta-da! The pee hole spews again! <br />I probably will still change the impeller soon as the motor is new to me and I don't know when it was done last. Thanks for all of the tips!
