Problems with new boat audio system

I installed a new Aerial Airborne Tower on my 05 Tahoe Q5 last week along with a set of twin speaker cans with Polk db speakers. I also replaced the 2 speakers inside the boat with the same Polk speakers. I have installed a JBL 4 channel marine amp as well. I have each set of tower speakers wired for 2 ohms to the rear channels of the amp and the 2 inside speakers wired to the front channel, 4 ohms each of course. The amp is wired directly to the battery with 8 gauge cable and the remote turn-on comes directly from the head unit. Since my cheapo factory headunit only has one set of pre-outs, I have Y cables at the amp to split that into 4 channels.

With that all said, the system sounds great with my XM radio or iPod. However, I am getting some popping when I operate my trim buttons and I get loud pops when I shut off the master power switch, which of course turns off the radio. What can be done to eliminate these pops?

With it being close to the end of my boating season, I don't want to spend a bunch of money right now only to stick the boat in storage for 6 months. If big modifications are required, they will have to wait until next spring. If it's not too expensive, I would like to get it done now so the boat is ready to go next year.

You should check to ensure that your ohm load isn't under what the stereo is stable at. This will eliminate possible 'clipping' that happens when you overtax an amplifier.

Next, check ground wires from the stereo itself.

Even with car amplifiers you get 'popping' when the power is cut from the stereo, turning down the audio before turning off the stereo is an easy cost free way of eliminating that from happening. :)

Post back.

The trim motor and any other motors (such as pumps) and relays can present very high inductive pops when turned on and off. Filters can help that. A stop at Radio Shack or audio store can help you pick out what you need.

The stereo itself is not pushing any speakers. All 6 speakers are powered from the amp. The rear channel tower speakers are wired for 2 ohms and the front channel speakers wired for 4 ohms. I actually have an older Pioneer car head unit that I am going to put in simply because it has 2 sets of pre-outs and I will be able to fade the tower speakers out. I will check the head unit ground and other wiring at that time.

In regards to the filters, would I need to put filters on the inductive loads like the trim pump or the stereo and amp?

Re: Problems with new boat audio system

Bringing this thread back up. The boat has been in storage all winter and I need to get this resolved before summer. The amp ground is good, since it's 8 gauge cable securely mounted between the amp and battery and about 2' long. Will isolating help this issue?

Your thoughts...

Get a power line filter that will handle the power for the amp and the stereo, that should take care of any popping.

In addition to the filter would also suggest adding a ground to the motor battery to resolve any ground loop issues. The radio may be grounded to the motor battery through the key switch, and the amp is isolated to the secondary battery.
