hey guys

I just brought a boat with a Chrysler 45hp outboard.

there is a problem with the steering. I have undone the cable at the outboard end. the piece of tube that slides through the pivot point (up and down) of the outboard has a problem. it seems to be frozen. i pulled out the cable and tube as far as it goes, about 12 inches but then it stops - as though there is something special holding it it place like a keyway ?

at the other end where it has an 'eye hook" where the steering attaches to the engine, it will not slide in and out . i have try ed to pull it like hell and sprayed heaps of WD40 all over it .

please see pictures.

tanks so much !!

The end where the arm attaches pic#2 the arm needs to come off. Some people hit that end and mushroom it out and it's like putting a stop on the end.Upon closer look at the pic#2 it looks like someone has hit it.Use a file to smooth off the high spots. Those steering tubes are available,so if it gets messed up you can get a new one.J

So are you saying that the 'eye bolt' in pic #2 ( that connects to the drag link ) needs to be pulled through the tilt tube with the support rod till it comes out the opposite end of the tilt tube where the steering cable attaches in pic #3

if so , it doesnt look like the eye bolt could actuary fit through the tilt tube and be pulled through to the other side !

Sounds like you might need a new cable. I replaced the steering in my boat and it was frozen up.

Yup #2 will come out #3(just make sure you wipe)REmove the steering arm and it should come out.It goes thru the front in a tube.It might be siezed in the tube #21 in the pic.You can apply heat and maybe???? it will come out.
Your steering might not be bad just stuck.J

Re: Problems with steering on Chrysler 45hp

Thanks, i got it out by bashing the steer support rod out of the tilt tube. will use fine emery paper to clean the support rod.

any ideas how to clean the rust out of the tilt tube ??? almost needs to be bored out to original size again.

steering cable its self is fine, and slides in and out.

how can i get grease on the inside of the inside of the steering cable to lubricate it inside the sleeve ????

cheers
