Hey guys, glad to be here.

I was over at my dad's house last week, and we were trying to work on his yamaha outboard. It cranks and idles pretty well, and will open up well in neutral. However, when we took it out to the lake, it will run fine, but will not open up in forward or reverse gear (it will rev up high in neutral however). We pulled all three carbs, cleaned them well, put in new fuel, etc, so we don't think it's a fuel issue. Do you have any idea as to what may cause this? We are absolutely puzzled.

Also, when shifting out of forward, the control box shifts easily back into N, but the foot stays in forward until you manually idle it up or kill the engine. It is an 85' model # 40HEO - Any help is much appreciated.

Re: Problems with Yamaha 40

Is the fuel primer bulb that comes from the tank right connected ?? I mean is it in right direction ? Look at the primer bulb, there is an arrow that show the direction for the fuel. You can connect the hole pipe wrong, the connectors are the same in both ends.
If thats OK then look at the connectors to the engine and to the tank. Take them off and look at them, are they looking OK ?

Adjust the cable. You have a fuel restriction from the description of the problem. Check from tank to carbs including the fuel pump.

The fuel line and bulb is all ok - the engine was running fine for several trips, then all of a sudden, next trip, it started acting up. It could be a linkage/cable issue, although the thing runs great at the shop out of the water. Any other ideas? Thanks again.
