This pic should give you an idea of the wheel height. The seat is out on the starboard side but its the same height as the one on the port. I can stand up behind the wheel and not hit my head. Standing or sitting, the view is good.

I was wondering if the gear box in front is plastic or metal. It doesn't specify that its metal, and it does say "High impact PVC housing " . What is your made from?

The front gear box part is metal with a black crinkle type of finish. It will work for you, just don't abuse it like I did. It comes with a nice thick foam pad & some other stuff too.

I went in Harbor freight today & picked up two 13 HP electric start engines that were marked down to $65 bucks! They list for $359.99 I also got a compound miter saw for $18 bucks normally $89.99. talk about the right place @ the right time!

Those gussets aren't gonna be head busters are they? With my luck, every time I turned around under it I'd be seeing stars!!

Just a thought. :)

Placed the order with Harbor Freight this morning. Did a search on the internet for coupon codes for H/F and found one that gave me $5.00 off the order. Nice!

Nahh. The gussets are far enought away from the rear seats, and you would have to lean fairly far forward (actually toward the stern) in the seat to come close to banging your head. Same with the roof bow. Its in front of the helm, so I won't hit my head when standing up.

looks great. i love seeing these fabrication projects! i think its going to fit the boat well...and i think the trade off that ooopps is talking about will be beneficial no matter how you look at it. more weight, less speed.....whatever. the thing that matters is you will have more days on the water with the added protection from the elements.... and anything that gets you out on the water another day = a beautiful thing!

This is what I'm ordering...

92623.gif

Its 49.95, but if you order from the printed catalog, its 39.95.

I'm adding this rubber disk...

94591.gif

So now I'll have two polisher/sanders. One with probably a metric arbor, and this one with the standard 5/8"x11tpi arbor.

Should do the trick.

Careful with that thing!!! I have one I use for HEAVY sanding. with 100 grit it can dig a 1/4" hole the diameter of the sander in oak in about 2 seconds. It's a great buffer though and if your careful it's a great sander also. Most HF tools are junk but I've had that sander going on two years now and run it hard often. You'll have no probs with it.

I only real worry I have about the weight is that it is up high, so it affects the boats center of gravity (I think thats the right term). The higher up the weight is, the easier it is to tip the boat. Say that the top ends up weighing 100 lbs. If the factory windshield and side glass weigh 30 lbs, then I've only added 70 lbs to the boat, and probably about 40 or 50 will be higher than the factory window glass was. I don't know if it will be noticable or not.

I do know that wind will push the boat around more with the added side profile. Thats why I tried to get a wedge shape to the profile, and made a two panel V shape in the windshield rather than follow the 3 panel factory windsheild design. Hopefully it will cut the wind better than it did with the factory navy top on. The hard top is only about 3 or 4 inches higher than the navy top. I guess I just have to wait until its out on the water to see how she performs.

I can hardly wait!!!!!! AAAGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!:D:D:D

Re: Project "1600 Capri Hard Top" has begun!

The temperature is getting too cool to work with epoxy around here. So this weekend I'm cleaning out the garage and storing everything in the shed until spring. I really need to get the cars back into the garage for the winter. Every morning this week I had to scrape frost off my car windows.

One thing for sure, I'm going to get going on this again early in the spring to have it finished for summer use.

It's hard to go from hard at it to twiddling your thumbs. The weather is getting cool here now so I don't get as many good weekend day's outside, makes for long stretches inbetween working on the boat. Thank goodness I live where the car can sleep outside in the winter. So I can work on my odds n ends boat projects in the garage during the winter months.

I just poured my new transom, its in the 50'sF but I set up a couple of halogens to trigger the resin ...and I ain't got no garage.
Cellphone camera, and its starting to rain.
I say stick with it til the flakes start blowing around.

Re: Project "1600 Capri Hard Top" has begun!

Today I unloaded the garage into the driveway and swept and cleaned the garage. Put all the stuff in the driveway away. Then emptied half the shed (12'x20') and re-organized it so there would be space for the top to stand on end. So far, so good. The wife and I carry the top to the shed and suprise!!! the top does not fit through the double doors of the shed. Not horizontal, not vertical not diagonal. It just won't fit, it's about 2 inches too wide.

So back to the garage, and re-organize the garage so the top can stand on end on my cars half of the garage. Great! Then pull in the Lincoln, and the bumper does not clear the door! AGGGGGGG!!!!!

A little more re-arranging stuff and I get the bumper of the lincoln to clear the door by about 2 inches.

So its in there. I'm wishing I had just put it on the boat for the winter, but the Bayliner is all wrapped and tied for the winter, and I just don't feel like re-doing the cover.

So the garage is clean. The shed is clean, and the top is safely stored in the garage. Also got all the bits and pieces like wipers and bolts and gaskets stored in boxes so I won't lose any of it.

I'm tired.

I may do that. Need to stop at the hardware on the way home this week and pick up a few eye screws and some rope. Shouldn't be too hard to rig up a way to hoist it up and tie it off. That way I don't have to worry about crushing it by accident.

I need a tarp tent like the one in the picture, I have no garage for the boat I have either! May be time to look into building one as the rain is more frequent here this time of year.

Re: Project "1600 Capri Hard Top" has begun!

Today it was warm, and I took off the ripped tarp to help dry the carpet. Then I got the bright idea to take the top from the garage and put it on the boat seeing as the tarp was off. Here are the photos. I nearly wet my pants....
