Project Boat (Need help with boat ID)

I am new to the forum and to boat restoration. I have read alot of the posts about floor and stringer restoration, and i think that is the direction i am heading. Back to the reason for this post.

A buddy of mine gave me this boat because he did not have the time to fix it up. I am not sure what model it is. The title says 1974 Thompson. The plate in the front of the boat says 222 I/O.

I contacted a local marine store and he stated there is no such model 222.
from my internet research i came up with a Thompson 222 Sportsman, but they state that it has a 165hp motor. The motor in mine is a 188HP.

Motor serial is 3836056.
Someone said the motor is a Ford 351W. Does this sound right?

Problem #2
I am trying to do some reading up on the stern drive and i can not identify it by the name plate since the serial # is missing. I know it is a mercruiser, but thats it.

Cool boat. Here's what I can tell

May be a 351. It's definitely a Ford engine. Either a 302 or 351

Mercruiser drive, that is good.

Look on the starboard side of the outside of the transom. There should be numbers there that will help id what you have.

My shop manual says that a 188 HP is a Ford 302, MCM 888/225S.

Thanks to everyone for the quick response.

I looked at the transom and found TMS2538D 273. I googled it and came up with nothing. Is there any way to ID the CID of the motor with the serial # on the valve cover? I am thinking about pulling the motor this winter so i can inspect it and possibly rebuild it, and i need to be sure i order the right kit.

BTW, welcome to iboats and nice boat! Does the motor run? You might want to post engine related stuff in the other motor section of the forum where an engine guru might be a better source of help.

I did some research for you and this is what I found.
302 CID ---------------------- 351 Cid
888 =188 HP ----------------223=233 HP
225S =225 HP

888 ( 2BBL) Ford 302 V-8 1971-1977 SN# 3108723 and up.
