Floor bad, stringers and transom good. This is an 88 bayliner about 17 feet. If I remove the floor do I need to take the motor off? Also I bought S-glas for another layer on the bottom inside of the hull for more strengh. The only issue with the hull I can see is that water seems to be seaping in near the front bottom of the keel. I can see light through that area. If I glass a layer on inside should I also get a keel saver?

If you are just doing the floor, I don't see a need to remove the outboard. Is it a bowrider, and is the open bow seating area molded with the rest of the upper deck? If it is, you won't be able to get to the floor underneath the molded seating area unless you either remove the upper deck or cut out the molded seating area enough to get to the floor. Hopefully someone with a similar Bayline can enlighten us on that. It would really not surprise me if you started working to find out that the stringers and transom end up being at least partially rotted, but I am hopeing for your sake I am wrong.

As for the keel, you would want to grind out all the skanky damaged old frayed glass fibers around the wound to at least 2 inches of clean healthy glass all the way around. You will want a dished effect, getting shallower as you grind outward. You can then lay a few layers of roving on the inside, and layer alternating layers of roving and mat or cloth on the outside. Each layer will be a bit bigger, filling in the dished area you have created. The final layer should be cloth for a smoother appearance. You can then install a keel guard to cover the repair and protect from future damage. Good luck, others will have good ways to do it as well....

On the Capri, the front bow seating structure isn't part of the upper deck, it's attached to the floor and stitched into the Vee in the front bow. Be VERY careful when cutting out the structure from where it's stitched into the Vee, as if it's like my 1950, they actually core the hull strakes with wood, and it's only a thin layer of mat away from being exposed.

I agree with Jason, for just the floor you shouldn't have to remove the motor. With the Capri's you also have no need to remove the upper deck.

As far as the bow seep a layer of S-Glass, or something similar in strength should stop the seep, but I suspect that it's the same as mine in that continued beaching has worn the hull thin in that area. While you can reinforce the inside (I'd use epoxy) you still have to determine why it's able to seep through. My guess is that the gelcoat on the bottom of the keel is worn through in which case a keel saver may be of value if it covers the entire area.

Hope that helps!
-Roger

Ccrew my thoughts to your thoughts LOL Oops. But I think the gel cote is supposed to stop light and be an outer coating correct? Well I know that the keel saver will fit over the keel area. Should I glass the outside with fiber glass tape and epoxy or just rough it up and apply the keel saver and work inside the boat? I think both would be over kill.

I have looked at the stringers (2) and they are solid because there are staple from the floor that are a bear to get out!!! and the fiberglass is intact as far as I can see from the inside and top where I started to remove the floor and the foam seem dry too. I have not started to remove the rear area or the seat area yet. seems the rot is located where the front hatch ski storage area was.

I believe the transoms in good shape as well. The boat was towed 1400 miles and I did put it in the water and was looking for flexing and porposing, none seen. no cracks in fiberglass and is very flat across rear of boat.

I am going to leave the two consoles? alone and work arounds them. I am going to remove all other wood from the consoles back however and only the floor in front. The cushion support area in the front is solid. However all is getting a cote of epoxy to seal the wood. Git rot? the floor and srtrings are going to be saturated with epoxy and S-Glassed in again to be sure. S-Glass is extremely Strong. and I will be coating all new plywood edges, top and bottom with epoxy. Then E-Glass a layer over the top of the entire floor and fileting in the edges. glassing up about 3-4 inches.

I was looking at some new boats and might change a few things in the boat as to storage and seating. I will be reinforcing the transom area.

I may add a 115 to the boat later on. its rated 85 now but we are at 4200-6000 ft altitude.

What I want is a boat I can just take to the lake and not worry it will fall apart at the first big wave. However the boat as it sits did go over some big wakes at full throttle no creaks groans or flexing so far but you never know. Kinda hard to stand on the stringers for 2 hours at 25 mph maybe faster not sure the speedo don't work. The prop was nicked up as well as the skeg. Some of the skeg was my fault!!!

I may not be putting in capet but that truck bedliner stuff.

Well I will post pics and progress. I am slow sometimes.

Once you reomve the carpet you kinda get that sinking feeling as the floor wood is usually stuck to it. :) Mine was left out 1 winter in Minnesota. The guy sold or traded it on a new boat. Mine is never left out now! Alway the cover is on. I will be replacing the seating, floor, and
some structure but the boat is solid as far as I can tell. Will keep you guys informed but snow and cold are expected for a while plus I have 12 days staight
to work.   :D
