My 1980's Bayliner Capri is soo much closer to being on the water. The epoxy is on it's way, and as soon as I get it, and get the holes patched .. I can mount the motor.

Here's an update for anyone who doesn't know. Bought the Capri 1600 in Oklahoma from a marine shop / salvage yard. Paid $800 for it. When I went down to look at it, the vinyl was all in **** poor shape (I expected that) and the transom seemed great.

Towed it home to Kansas City, and then found wet wood in the transom. Not rotten, and it's solid. I hung my Merc 65 horse motor on it and then jostled it around. The transom is solid and doesn't flex (except for the slightest bit, and that was when I stood on the skeg .. mind you I'm over 340 pounds!).

It's been under tarp without drain tube or splashwell drain tube since I bought it. It's not been wet, and lots of hot dry days. I've recently checked the transom and it's pretty much dried out. Oh, I forgot.. There are 3 different sets of motor holes in the transom. They just RTV Blue sealed the holes when they put on different motors. I cleaned those out and it's been airing through them, too.

My plans are as follows: Get some dowels the size around as the motor bolt holes. Coat the holes and the dowels with epoxy resin. Make them about 1-2mm shorter than the hole on both sides. When those have set in there, make up some peanut butter (cabosil / epoxy resin) and seal the holes. New drain tube / splashwell drain tube. Mount the motor, re-run the electric wires in the boat (I've gotten them cut out .. they were hacked BAD). I'm talking Nav lights / horn. Not much wiring. The mercury harness i've had to re-do (the wires in the control box were JUNK and bare, they're from 1968) but 1 foot down the harness they're pliable and in good shape). I'm just going to mount the key / choke switch on the dashboard for now.

Once the motor's on there, I'm going to put a bucket of water under it, and start it up - making sure it "pees" like it should (water pump impeller). If it doesn't I'll pull the LU and replace the impeller).

Lay down some carpet and get that thing on the water.

This winter it is going to need a floor and I might go ahead and follow Realgun's lead and do the stringers / transom (the floor is KIND OF soft, but not to the point of where I go through it).

Thoughts all?

Re: Project Update...

Rob The stringers seem to hold up in the liners as they actually coved the Alaskan Yellow Pine with enough glass. Mine are pretty darn big for such a small boat. But better check anyway. If the transom is not wet and is as solid as you think you may not have to do that however make sure! You can always fill in the wee little peek holes with epoxy.

Good luck!
