So today I'm trying to figure out how to calculate prop pitch, from a layman's standpoint. Thought I knew how to do it......yeah right! Had a guy who wanted to know and thought I was just thing to help him out.

Fiddled with props (and other things...calculators, rulers, compasses, speed square, paper, pencils, fiddled with my glasses....had a couple of beers) and all. Worked on it all day long. Weather man said it would rain and end the drought. Even the Intellicast radar said it was raining on us....yup.

We had a 12" rain all right; 12" between droplets for as many seconds.

Was working with Merc SS thru hub props of 13+ inch diameter. In the process, and out of curiousity, I took my finger and wiped the inside of my "thru hub exhausts". Hmmmmm

So I wiped them (all) again, and again, and again.....still no black stuff......you know carbon, oil dripping, creeping crud, and all the stuff you read about people having out their tail pipe.

Decarb with Sea Foam?.......you bet your bippie.

For any antonistic dudes out there I blew this stuff off for the first 2 months I was on the forum and finally gave in to the "overt pressure" (Grin) from JB and Dhaley and the likes of them who knew their stuff and I was "too smart" to listen....yeah right (dumbass).

Now all I need to do is find the name and address of the marketing manager for those guys (Sea Foam) and see if I can get a piece of the action. Grin. Yeah right....hold your breath. I'm retired. Formal work is over for me.

But it works, and if you haven't tried it you are stealing from yourself and your engine; all your engines, not just marine. BTDT

Have fun with your boat. Take your dog along with you (but don't let him drive). He loves you regardless; no strings attached.

Mark

Re: Promised I wouldn't but I lied

I gotta tell ya Mark, I have used it in my outboard for awhile and really never noticed much difference in the way it runs. But it is pretty clean inside anyway from what I can tell. I will attribute this to the Seafoam for now. But, my Daughter has a 1997 Toyota Camry, that from the day we bought it, has had a hesitation when accelerating from a standstill. She complained that it was getting worse lately and her mileage was going downhill fast too. Well, since it wasn't that long since I last tuned it up, I figured that doing it again was useless. But, I happened to be at NAPA about a week ago to get tune-up parts for my pickup truck and low and behold, I happened down the aisle with the Seafoam. Well, picked up a can thinking it couldn't hurt to try some in her car. Dumped the can in there with about half a tank of gas remaining and told her to drive it until close to empty. I gotta tell ya, that S*** works!! No more hesitation and she says it's running like a top. I drove it the other day and I could tell the difference the minute I stepped on the gas. More power, no hesitation and ran smooth. Made me a believer real quick....So rant all you want. I'm all ears....... ;)

I was having a terrible problem with indigestion - doc thought I might even have an ulcer - I figured "why the heck not?" - started mixing a shot of seafoam with my morning

I ran a can of Seafoam thru my '59 Johnson 18. Although is runs beautifully, I figured what the heck... Prior, the compression was 118/112. Compression is now 120/116, with a smoother idle. Not a huge increase, but it brought that lower cylider up a bit...

Smoked like heck, but seemed to work. Gotta love it!

jtexas

Can we get a follow-up on the indigestion problem?? Did the Seafoam do the trick?? Maybe some deep creep right down the throat will work faster..... :D :D

Better question, did it loosen up all the crud?

interesting you should say that, ricketyboat...I hear a can of deep-creep down the throat is just the thing for when the missus is "helping you plan your day"...

seriously, Mark has just about worn me down...I actually have a spray can of the stuff...just haven't found the right place to do it...don't want that crud all over my street. Do y'all decarb your motors on the lake? Surely not at a dock or on a ramp? or in your own driveway?

Re: Promised I wouldn't but I lied

I add it to my OB tank every time I add gas so there is no billowing smoke and mess. I did not do the brute force on my OB.

I did it on my other 2 cycle engines: Pulled the plugs and squirted a healthy amount into cylinders; pulled off the cowl and added a healthy squirt to the carbs.....pulled the engines thru several times......let em sit for like 15 minutes and while I was waiting, I sprayed (and let soak) the plugs till all the crud was washed off.

Also while waiting, I added some to the 2 cycle gas mix.

Put the plugs back in, added the gas, flipped on the choke and walla.....all fired right off, I mean right off.....smoke cloud lasted for about a minute and was gone. They run like new and start much faster than they did.......my wife can even start the weed eater now............(there's a message here....Grin)

Hey Rick,

I'm going to do a number on my farm truck the next time I go in for inspection. They advertise that it helps pass emission tests and my truck needs all the help it can get since it is older and doesn't get run very much.

I know you are thrilled about the daughter's Toyota and I'd bet she thinks you are Mr. Wonderful. Grin

I don't know much, but I do know it worked. How? Why? I don't know. But it sure makes a believer out of ya pretty quick....Lets here the results on the truck when you get them. I'm curious....On the Toyota, you gotta realize I have been chasing that problem for a long time and was just dumbfounded when the Seafoam worked....

I just went down to the lake really early (3:30 a.m.) one morning before the ramp got busy and did the decarb. Left the boat on the trailer while I went about my business. I did the highly concentrated version in a small gas can. Fifteen minute sessions of burning gas and then letting the motor sit lasted about an hour before I burned all the gas in the can. I too am very happy with the results.

Re: Promised I wouldn't but I lied

Rick,

Will do on the farm truck.

When we were raising 4 kiddo's I used to buy rent-a-wrecks and fix them up so that they had something to drive without "tearing up" the family bus.

On one occasion, I bought a Toyota Corolla that appeared to have an intake manifold leak but I could never find it. Sold the car without being able to fix it and I thought I was a pretty good mechanic.

After reading this, I am wondering if Sea Foam would have fixed me right up? Will never know.

Re: Promised I wouldn't but I lied

Hey Mark, we ran 8, 16oz cans in 125gal diesel in a pete with a 430/500 we were having some milage issues with, and was told the injectors were worn out....
Ran on that tank to North Dakota and the other back, and the ave fuel milage was 4.3 for the previous 6 months, my trip home and re-fill added up to 6.4 average
We run 3 cans per side now and the average has stabilized about 6.1...2 mile to the gallon increase is a wallet full when running 600-700 miles a day.......

Re: Promised I wouldn't but I lied

Very impressive. I know you are a happy camper.

I usually run Marvel Mystery in my diesels with ATF for lube due to low sulpher. The Foam is much more expensive, but I may convert to it for all my engines regardless.

For awhile, in the early 90's I ran an 18 wheeler and burned 100 gal a day. Diesel was $1 at first and then it went to $1.10. I just felt that some jerk just reached into my pocket and pulled out a $10 bill.

With the average price of Diesel around here sitting at $285, I'd be PO'd all the time if I was still running the rig.

Enjoyed the chat.
