I have a clean 1995 130 HP V4 Johnson motor on the way, without a prop. I'll be rigging it on a big 17' Deep-V runabout. This boat, a 74 Olympic from Washington State is built solid. Primary use will be saltwater salmon fishing. I believe MAX RPM for this motor is 5500 and I'm leaning towards a standard 3 blade aluminum prop. For good all-around performance what would be a good prop pitch starting point? Thanks, CC.

I would start with a 17 pitch. They have Solas props here at IBoats at a good price. Depending on weight, and load in your boat, a 17p or 19p should be a good place to start. That motor can exceed the 5500rpm, I wouldnt worry to much about running it a few hundred over 5500. But I wouldnt run it over 6000.

Actually 5500 is about the lowest rpm you should target. Depending on which power pack is on the motor the rev limiter can be as high as 6700. As for which propyou need a lot depends on which style gearcase it has. The 13 spline shaft means it has the 4.25" style and uses props in the 13.25" diameter range. A 15 splineshaft uses props in the 14.25" diameter range for 4.75" gearcases.
