Hello,
first off I just wanted to say hello since this is my first post on this board. I have a 16' Landau (aluminum)with an 80" beam. It is a duck hunting machine and I love it. I just recently got a freshly re-built 92 Johnson 40hp tiller for it. The shop I got if from gave me a 15 pitch prop for it. It has a tremendous amount of torque and will move out pretty well. I am still running 2x the oil so I really have not been able to put it to the real test yet. My question is, Is this the right prop for this boat/motor combo? Second question is does anyone run any type of tach on a tiller mount motor? I have always had tachs on all of my boats since they were all console controlled boats. How would I determine the proper prop without a tach reading? Thanks for the help.

Chad
ILDUCKHUNTER

A tach is the only way to calculate your prop. If you have your boat details you can get an estimate on http://www.mercurymarine.com (click Propeller Selector). Remember to count in all gear to get boat weight.

Re: Prop and Tach questions.

Try a tinytach. They look like a small digital travel clock and require no power from the motor -- you just wrap a receiver wire around the plug lead wires on any 2 stroke. Check out their website. You could attach the tach to the boat side of your engine cowling, install it somewhere dry or just keep it in your tool kit and attach it when you want a reading.

I have a manual start tiller motor converted to regular steering and the tinytach works great for me. More accurate than the teleflex I used before.
