prop depth?

I am pushing a 14' double wide with a 92 johnson 25hp motor. I am not sure if the prop is at the correct depth. If 2 people are sitting in the back the boat will not plane out and the prop will eventually free spool as if I have spun the prop. If there is to much weight in the front it will do the same. Shouldnt this motor be sufficient for 3 people? Any help is greatly appreciated as I am new to this outboard set up.

Re: prop depth?

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,... The plate above the prop should be even with the bottom of the hull...

Re: prop depth?

Never heard the term "double wide".
There is a possability you have a spun hub in the prop; but check the antivent plate (just above the prop). As bondo suggested check that it is about even with the bottom of the boat. You can use a straight edge along the keel to check the demension.

Re: prop depth?

the antivent plate seems to be in the right place... the prop is not spun. once we get on plane she runs wide open.. a little water sprays up.. none gets in the boat though. any other ideas? just seams like 25hp on an aluminum boat should get 3 people along pretty good.

Re: prop depth?

Whats your prop pitch?
Might be to big and maybe your not getting wide open throttle.
A tach is about the only thing you can use to see if your running at the right rpm range.
"Tiny tach"'s are a resonable price...
Without going to crazy maybe someone you know has another smaller pitch prop you can try but like I said earlier would be nice if you had a tach.

Re: prop depth?

Your first post said the prop is spun when loaded "will not plane out and the prop will eventually free spool as if I have spun the prop. If there is to much weight in the front it will do the same."
Sounds like a spun prop!

Is the motor running on all cylinders?
Check the condition of the plugs, do a compression check.
Does the boat have homemade decks, bait wells etc?

A good running 25hp on a 14' doublewide jon should have no trouble getting up on plane.
