I need to buy a new prop for my 84 90hp Merc outboard. The old one is hammered and it looks like its already been fixed at least once. Where is the best place to buy a prop, and do i need anything other than the number off the back of the prop to buy one? I'm a rookie so i know nothing about props. No need to change pitch or anything, i am quite sure that the one i am replacing is the stock prop. any brand to stay away from? the number on the prop is 48 77346 A40 19P

My first inclination is to look on my local craigslist for one that matches or comes close. Second would be ebay as they may have exactly what you are looking for for about $50 or so. Lastly would be your local West Marine or local prop shop, this saves shipping costs. You could also have the prop shop look at your current prop for a prop-er analysis....

the prop that is on it is a 15 spling 19 pitch, i have access to a 17p prop, is this "close enough" or is there no way to tell without putting the prop on the boat?

Now is the time to improve your prop selection. If you read the stickys at the top of the page and give us as much info as possible and any problems or improvements you would like
we may be able to help you select a prop.
Selecting a prop should be based on the performance with the present prop.
The motor needs to be able to operate within its rated rpm range
The 17 will raise the rpm 300 to 400. over the 19.The wot rpm rating is 5,000.
You can find new props right here at iboats who provides this site.
The Solas Amita is a good prop at a reasonable price.Just go to the prop store page
under marine store at the top of the page.
