ok, i just bought a new ranger 178 vx with a 150 yahama. and i am trying to find the right prop. here is my dillema...the boat has a top speed of 60 mph on gps but the boat runs flat (no bow lift). i am pretty sure that i need to get bow up, i just sold my other boat which was a small nitro (16 ft) with a 90 hp merc. i had a stilletto 23 pitch prop and i could control the bow any speed, this boat no matter how much trim (in or out ) the bow pretty much stays the same(but rpm's vary with trim pos). it came with a 23 pitch quicksilver thunderbolt???? i can get around 5700 rpm's with this prop, though i don't stay there long, as max in the manual is 5500. any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: prop for new boat

Couldn't find a 178vx but a 178 dvsx it doesn't strike me as an exceptiomally light boat. unless the almost 1500 lb weight includes the 150.Perhaps it has a fast hull;
if so why is the bow so hard to get up.
I'm sure no expert when it comes to the more exotic props ie bow lift,stern lift etc.
I did look up a bunch of boats about the size and type of yours running 150s Many were much slower, high 40s, only one was faster under 62.It seems your close.
at 60.And the rpm basically right but for 200 rpm.I suppose a 24" would put you close the 5,500 might result is a little more speed. It would be imteresting to see the results of a prop that may supply more bow lift.

Re: prop for new boat

i am probably going to get another stiletto prop. the performance from that prop was great on the nitro, i don't see why it would be any differnent on this boat. took it out this weekend on a club tourney with my fishin bud and the top rpms with full load of fuel and two large tackle boxes ( not to mention almost 35 lbs of fish between the both of us) the rpm's were at 5600. i will probably go with the 23 pitch as they don't make a 24.
