PROP FROZE ON SHAFT

After several days of soaking in Kroil, pounding with a dead blow hammer and a gear puller, I cut the prop in sections to get to the splined hub and removed the *&^%$ thing with a punch and hammer. All is good except for the prop which is in a hundred pieces on the floor. The problem wasn't lack of grease or corrosion, it was the prop shaft. Looks like when they machined it they left tooling marks (cuts) on the shaft which acted like one way grips. Prop would slide on ok but not off. I think a little work with a Dremel grinder will fix it. Damnist thing I've seen in a while!

I find That hard to believe,..............<br /><br />That would mean that that prop has been on that motor for 22 Years..........<br /><br />I'd Sooner Blame it on Lack of Grease,+ Maintenance.........<br />'Course,...... Being mounted for 22 Years,....... Is a Lack of Grease,+ Maintenance.........<br /><br /><br />I've Never seen a Propshaft that Didn't have Tool Marks..............

Twice a year....pull it and grease it and as Bondo says; "any grease is better than no grease at all"......

Re: PROP FROZE ON SHAFT

In knowing some history of the motor and with the condition of the prop I don't believe the prop had ever been off. The shaft still had grease on it. As a check I cleaned the shaft and hub center, greased them and slid it back on. It stuck again and required the hammer and punch to remove. Has to be the tool marks being such causing the shaft to grip the hub.

And pull the thrust washer and remove that fishing line before it cuts your seal.
