Hello All: newbe here!

My ? is this! I just notice my propeller on my 48 spec 1989 Johnson o/b has a slight but noticable whobble while spinning. when I shut it down I also notice that there is some play when I hold the prop and slide it back and forth on the shft maybe a 1/4" play. How would I correct this problem?

I just bought the boat a 1989 16' Invader, with this engine I havn't even put her in the water yet! and I'm still waiting for the manual (via) USPS.

Thanks, Al

Re: PROP HAS WOBBLE

There should be a fairly thick thrust washer on the back end of the propeller (the portion towards the lower unit). Should that be missing, install one (Part #320305). If it's missing, check here on iboats first for one. If not available here, contact me as I have a couple left in stock.

Now, if that thrust washer is present, there should also be a spacer between the prop and the propeller (Part #315810), same scenario (iboats/myself).

Now, with both the thrust washer and spacer present, it should simply be a case of tightening the prop nut to where it belongs.

The wobble? Engine not running, look closely at the center indentation on the end of the propshaft and slowly turn the propeller/propshaft. If that indentation doesn't stay perfectly centered, the propshaft is bent.

If bent, the lower unit would require complete dismantling to have the propshaft straightened at a reliable propeller repair shop or machine shop... or have the propshaft replaced. If replacement is required, same scenario (iboats first/then myself).Let us know what you find.

The prop shaft is slightly bent. and I'm quessing the thrust washer is not inplace, like Joe said! because of the play in the prop. I can't wait to get the manual so I can rip this baby apart. But I wonder if it's worth replacing the shaft. Hummmm!
