What year motor?Usually measured by the antivent plate just above the prop.
Most modern motors the plate should be visable on plane,about even with the bottom or perhaps about an inch above.The idea is to have as little motor in the water as possible and still perform right.The older OMC motors with the split gearcase
can be somewhat limited though should be raised to a point just before venting becomes a problem.
