This winter I found used $50:eek: stainless 21 pitch prop to replace my 19 that had my engine running too fast at WOT.. When I went and picked it up from the fella I took one of my old ones with me to make sure they was the same.. Spline count, size and everything looked good.. It had been made to a 21 pitch and some prop shop had cupped the blade and everything.. So I been chomping at the bit to try the thing out.. Stuck it on my shaft and it goes on no problem, but is sloppy.. Now I don't have a dial caliper, but I am pretty sure the hub on the used one is a hair bigger.. Put my old one back on and it is perfect.. So this is what I want to know... Is it worth it to take the thing to a prop shop and have the correct hub installed? The used one came off a Outboard Johnson and from what I looked at shoulda been a good fit.. The hub on it may be wolerd out a bit. Not sure.. Also about how much would such a repair run? Got plenty of prop shops around here, but wanta have a idea how much..

Re: Prop hub

Well, your engine should have a thrust washer at the back of the prop and of course, the nut in front tightens it down. So once you put everything together, there should be almost no side play, even though the splines are a little loose. And, once you run the engine, the splines will seat together like gear teeth so no play will be felt there. I say run it as is to tese. If you feel unusual vibration, then have it re-hubbed. Cost? A new hub sells for somewhere around 30, then tack on prop shop charges--I suppose 50-75 bucks.

I installed it.. It is very slight but it has a wobble.. With the wheel turning you can hear it.. I am afraid it may need a new hub.. You can kinda tell a difference between the 2.. Kinda.. I could post a picture I guess

I personaly would not run it , if the splines feel to lose. You could damage the shaft. Im a tool maker, get the spine checked first. A lose fit to one person, may be alot differant to another.
