I just reinstalled my prop and it has about a 1/8-1/4" play (up and down) now when on tight. Is this normal? I dont recall if it had this before. Nut is on as tight as I can get it.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks

There should be no play in it at all. Is it moving on the shaft or the hub of the prop?

Re: Prop install help

I am not 100% sure which one. Its on a 3.0L Mercruiser with an Alpha 1. Took the prop off and retightened it and same thing. THe amount is minimal but does move some. If I had to guess I would say the hub is tight and the movement in on the shaft.

Did you put the thrust bushing back on? It goes on before the prop.

Re: Prop install help

I have the same problem but with a new prop.

The alpha one gen II leg came with a 16 X 16 cupped prop and it was showing so much wear I replaced it with a Michigan Wheel of the same design.

When you look at the two props from the back, the brass center bearing surface is deeper inset on the new prop.

I put it on the boat and torqued the prop nut using the same thrust bearing as the old prop and found that there is a lot of movement fore and aft on the prop shaft. I'd say at least 1/4 of an inch by guessing.

Do I need a different thrust bearing or did they manufacture the prop wrong?

Thanks for any help guys!

Re: Prop install help

After checking the boats at Bass Pro Mills, they all have the slight play. Mine ran fine this weekend as well.

Re: Prop install help

I just talked with the manufacturer, since the dealer said once it touches the water they will not accept it back.

They believe the prop was assembled incorrectly and issued an RMA so that they can examine it at the factory.

It looks like I am back to the old prop and puttering around the river for a while...
