Prop Nut - Tighten or loosen to install pin?

All,

I am putting a new prop on my outboard. After putting on the new prop (trial run, hand tightening only - haven't greased yet), I noticed that the nut may not be aligned for pin re-insertion.

If after putting on grease, and re-installing prop, washer and nut, there is still mis-alignment, should I try to tighten to get the pin in or back it off a bit?

I read somewhere in here that it may be best to favor to the loose side to do this, and that makes sense. I do not see these parts "giving" much, to try to tighten.

I use to keep about 1/8 inch slack. This way it moves a bit when you shift gears. When it got a bit stiff to move by hand I would clean and regrease it. ( saltwater)

I believe the recommended technique is to torque to specs. If necessary after that, move whatever direction that is closer to being able to insert the cotter pin.

I am not aware that finger tight was ever the way to tighten a prop nut.

Yep...... torque to specs, then "tighten" a little more to insert pin, if needed. That's what Johnson sez...... Never heard of finger tight either.... My specs are 36 - 43 ft lbs. I guessing they all should be in the same ballpark.... Should tell you in your owners manual...
