Hi, I have a 2000 1800 Lund Fisherman with a 130Hp Honda. I am running the original prop, which I believe is an aluminum 3x13.25x17r. Overall, it is a bit slow on the hole shot, it doesn't get up on plane very quickly, and it doesn't like to maintain a speed of 18-22 mph at all and often loses speed/power in the corners/turns, often resulting in coming off plane. Thus, when skiing/tubing, we are always adjusting the throttle. We do like the top end speed, but find that we need to be within 18-22 mph quite often. What prop would you suggest? Larger diameter, smaller pitch, and/or more blades? I was thinking a 3x13.75x15r. Suggestions? Thanks.

Prop selection is based 100% on RPM.

When you are running at full throttle/trimmed out/top speed, what RPM is your current prop spinning? How fast are you going?

What is the correct operating RPM range for your motor?

Basically, for your purposes, you will want to prop for the very top of the RPM range of your motor. If you are currently below that number, you can reduce pitch to gain the RPM's. This will improve holeshot. Generically speaking, 4 blade props are better at holding low-speed planing, offer better holeshot, and smoother operation. They can also be a little slower on top end.

Re: prop on 130 honda and 1800 fisherman

Thanks for the reply.

I believe the current top-speed RPM is around 5400. Top speed is around 42, at least in the straightaways. The operating for the motor is 5000-6000 RPM.

Will a reduced pitch prop maintain speeds in corners, maintain lower speed planing, and maintain speeds within the 18-22 mph range better?

What would be the advantage to going to a larger diameter prop? Any? Would RPMs be lower?

Sounds to me like a 4 blade prop might be an answer...

Thanks for the reply.

You want to aim for closer to 6,000 than you currently are.

The reduced pitch in the same style prop will do nothing but improve your holeshot. For the other things you are trying to improve, you need to look at prop design. And motor placement possibly...

I think a 15 pitch 4 blade will serve you well and cure most of your ills.

And just maybe your motor needs to be raised up? Does it ever ventillate/blow the prop out of the water on a turn? If no, it might be set a bit too low. Several people like to say you should run the motor as high as possible...just at the edge of ventilating. But I freely admit I'm not all that well versed in outboard motor placement...so I'd prefer to let others talk about that topic more.
