Pitch, diameter, blade shape and number of blades determines load on the engine... and how much thrust you are attempting to transfer to the water at any given rpm/

Too much diameter and pitch for the blade shape and count will overload the engine and make you SLOWER. plus burn up the engine.

An outboard typically comes with a compromise prop that will be OK for general purpose but may not be best for your hull. Generally a little less load than the engine can handle, so you have to watch rpm at top end to prevent overspeeding the engine (which throws rods).

Many people never change from the OEM prop and are happy. Someone looking for max performance will do some testing and find the best prop for the way they want to run the boat. Skiers want more power, racers want more speed.

Get us the details, year, make and model of boat.Dry weight if possible.Prop size, usually under the prop nut sometimes near the base of the blades.
Do a lightly loaded wot run.Get us the gps speed and wot(wide open throttle) rpm.Things are probably good but we may be able to fine tune a little.

I have a 22ft 1996 BAJA 226 DSR. 350 mercy with ALFA 1. The prop is a Rapture 14.25 R19. We have only had the boat 2 years and love it but unlike most we are not interested in going fast. We purchased the boat with the intent of skiing and tubing. The boat runs great and doesn't lack any power but it does drag more than I like when trying to get adult skiers up. I was looking for advise. I'm thinking of going to a 4 bladed prop or dropping to a 17 pitch. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Mr. Steve. Welcome aboard. You might choose to look at the top of the Forums and read the rules. One of them is "hijacking a thread" You just hijacked this one, or attempted to do so, sir.

Go to the top of this forum section and open your own "New Post/Thread" with a few word title that gives a little insight into the contents of your post. This is the prop forum so you are good to go there for prop advice.

It's worth your trouble as it will get your post in front of the world where all can see it and hopefully get you a useful answer. Tacking on this one hides the true intent from someone that may be eager and capable in helping you to solve your problem/answer your question. Just do your title, and cut and paste what you have here.

Look on your prop housing, there will be a series of numbers then number like 15P for example. If your happy with your boats performance your good to go. to get more speed you then move to a 17P,19P to get more power you drop to a 13P or 11P of course this is just an example. One thing about a SS prop is it does not flex, however if you hit something with it, chances are you will damage your lower unit.
