1989 Johnson 40 HP

With the engine in neutral I can rotate the prop about 5 degrees before it starts turning the shaft.

Is this normal? If not what should I suspect?

The engine does not make any clunking noise when shifted into forward or reverse.

It also will run at 4800 rpm on the river with normal load of people and gear.
(no grinding or unusual noises)

Any inputs would be appreciated.

Gerry

Re: Prop Play

I hope I'm understanding this. Are you referring to the prop shaft?I would think(turning)the prop should turn the shaft imediately unless the prop hub is spun or in poor condition.

Re: Prop Play

The prop only "hooks up" solid when the clutch dog ears contact the gear ears. Yes there is some play in there.

Re: Prop Play

Got it now Reel. Yes the prop should turn the propshft immediately. No play. You need to determine if the play is in the prop to shaft splines or in the prop itself.
