Prop problem...

Hello,

Last week I had the impeller on my 74ish (haven't checked the serial number) mercury 200 (20hp). Yesterday, I took it out for the first time since the work. After about 10 minutes the engine reved suspiciously high. Upon further inspection I found that the prop had spun/sheared off the spindle. Does the prop have to be taken off to remove the lower unit and change the impeller? I'm wondering if this is just purely coincidence that it broke off after the repair, or if the mechanic might have missed something. Could it have just been time for it to go? Seems fishy...

Also, I have a 68 mercury 200 that isn't running. I was contemplating putting the lower unit of the 68 on the 74ish motor. Are there multiple lower units during these years? I was looking at my manual and it appears that all the lower units from 65-78 are "Type B", but I'm assuming there are different specs on different units...any idea?

Thanks

Hunter
