I have an older Elgin with decal SS and 4 ( most likely purchased in Canada) which I am assuming is Simpson Sears and 4 HP. The only #'s I could find were on the mounting bracket (model C945-5045 and Serial # 682537 or 662537) and on a small bracket near carb is 634-08B and 4564940. I would like to disassemble lower end and install a new seal kit. I cannot determine how to remove prop as there are no pins or screws visible and I do not want to force. Could someone tell me how this prop would be removed and possibly a year of the motor so I could order any parts if available. Thanks in advance.

Re: Prop removal older Elgin

you posted Serial # 682537 for your motor. is it possible that its #582...?
simpson sears sold elgin motors that began with this serial between 65-70. they were built by a company called "clinton mod" possibly this is represented by the c in the model number C945-5045. this is only a guess!!
if you post more info on the motor i may be able to help you. hk, cooling method, and even color of paint can be important. post everything that you know about the motor.

I am positive that the serial # starts with a 6. The carb has Lawson Power Products, Grafton Wisconson stamped in plate. The color of the motor is white. I may not know the difference between water cooled or air cooled except that on a 35 Johnson I had a one time the water would come out a couple of holes above water line. This little motor has no holes above water line. I still cannot find any pins, screws or nuts that would hold the prop on. It is cast complete with shaft which looks like it would maybe slip over the gear shaft. There is an outer seal. Would the pin be behind this seal?

only one way to find out. must be a pin somewhere. unless its a reverse thread?? probably a locking ring (my desciption) behind the seal.

Re: Prop removal older Elgin

Finally got enough nerve to knock off the prop. There is a removable splined collar that would work like a slip clutch and the prop was just pressed on. This was hidden in behind the rear seal. I was able to remove the drive shaft assembly and the larger bevel gear looks in good shape. There is a small ball bearing assembly that fits in the back recess and the drive shaft assembly rides in this. The smaller bevel gear which is attached to a rod that comes down inside the motor is not in good shape. Here again there is no pin or screw but quite possibly threaded onto end of shaft. I tried prying this gear off and also tried to wind off but neither worked yet. On the drive shaft assembly itself the large threaded retainer has a smaller seal about the shaft. Again the collar that held the clutch looks like it also is threaded onso I have to remove it first to replace the seal. Any suggestions?
