Prop selection and difference between 90 degree and 60 degree looper

#1 - Looking at a 1995 J90TLEOR Johnson 90 horse to put on a 20 foot voyager pontoon. This motor does not have a prop on it. What would be a good model for a pontoon looking to top out around 30 I would think, enough acceleration and torque to ski and tube if needed?
#2 - This 90 is a 90 degree cv versus a 60 degree I have now. Is there a significant difference between them? I am only aware that this is the angle of the powerhead and am not sure what it means. Is there a free online owners manual or a reference guide for a J90TLEOR anywhere?
Thanks,
Kevin

Is 90 hp enough for you to ski with that outfit, or to achieve 30 mph ??
Not saying it is not but I do have my doubts.
Good way to find the right prop is to get a prop dealer to let you try a few different pitches, diameters, styles etc. When you find the best one for your needs buy it from them.
Good prop dealers will let you do this. Don't ding it up though unless you are prepared to buy it.:)

Yeah, i might be optimistic with 30 and skiing, but I was getting a little over 20 with a 50 horse on it, so it might be able to do it. Someone told me 1995 they changed the 90 degree to almost match the 60 degree looper, stating the difference is the location of the carb and throttle bodies and the 95 being the updated crossflow of the late 80's. He also said 90 degree is easier and cheaper to fix if there is a problem. Anyone know which performs better? I'm assuming the 60 would have a litter better fuel/air mix ratio.
Thanks,
Kevin

The 1995 90HP J90TLEOR motor is basically the same motor as the earlier crossflow motors and has little to compete with the looper designs in terms of torque or fuel efficiency. It is however the power equivalent of the 115HP crossflow of the early eighties.

You can get enough to pull skiers in any event, just keep lowering the propeller pitch until you get the power that you feel you need.

You will sacrifice your top speed the lower your prop pitch gets although you will gain some hole shot power for skiing.
You may be better having 2 props. One for cruising and one for skiing.
We have a lower pitch prop that not only acts as a spare on board but is great for new or multiple skiers / tubers.

Re: Prop selection and difference between 90 degree and 60 degree looper

the 90CV is way different than the 60LV!!

the looper (60 LV) is more fuel efficient than the 90CV , and the 60 LV is bad on fuel!!...got that?

the dynamics of getting a pontoon boat up on plane are beyond me....but all things being equal, if the 50 running good was pushing you at 20 MPH, you should be able to set up the 90 to push you to the 30's barring some phenomenon that prevents a big ole pontoon from reaching a certain speed....

how did you verify the 20 MPH?

I am wondering if it is possible to ski with a pontoon boat, especially with only a 90HP??

the hole shot has to be awful!!! and drawn out....

dont forget to let us know how it worked out.

Re: Prop selection and difference between 90 degree and 60 degree looper

most pontoon boats I have seen have 13 or 15 pitch props..mostly 13. If you have the larger style pontoons you may be able to hit 30..but as stated earlier the hole shot will still be kind of slow compared to a 16 foot speed boat. this will make it difficult for skiers to get up...tubing should be ok though although you will probably not get very fast pulling a tube.

Re: Prop selection and difference between 90 degree and 60 degree looper

Thanks for the advice. i ended up picking the 90 as the price was much better here locally. I am going through the motor now to tune it up and just do a basic servicing on it before putting it on the boat. I have enlisted the service of a good boat mechanic to help me set it up. I'll let you know how it goes. BTW.. I verified the 20 on a plug in GPS with only 2 people in it and a fishing set up, so it was pretty light.

I would be very interested in your top speed. Also pontoon length and diameter. If you could post this info I would be appreciative.
Thanks Sparkie
