Hi,
above seal is leaking badly - rubber has even worn away revealing a broken wire spring around the perimeter of the seal...oil just oozes out ever so nochalantly....white creamy stuff - evern worse...

I have a puller on the bearing housing but it refuses to budge. I doubt it's been out since new, by the way it is stuck in there.

My question is what "tricks" or methods do those who do this all the time employ to coax out stubborn housings like this?

There must be a way,,, I've just yet to find it....
Thanks to all,
David

Hi Dave....how goes it "down-under"?

Well assuming you have removed both retaining bolts and the puller won't budge it, I usually will try a slide hammer next. I fashioned a hook to go around the ribs in the carrier. A few good whacks and it losens up. You may have to try and heat the outter shell with a propane torch in order for it to come out. Makes the paint job a mess but sometimes it's the only way. Also, try soaking it down in PB Blaster. Let it set over night drowning in the stuff. May be enough to losen it up.

Keep us posted to your progress.

David..... Knowing the time that can be involved in removing the carrier assy, I have at times used the tip of a proper size screwdriver to simply pry the old seal(s) out.

I know that at times, it's pretty well impossible, but it's worth a try.

Thanks guys,

beautiful day in Sydney OBJ - would be better without this %&$^#& gearbox dilemma...

this is after the keyway on the flywhell sheared off 2days ago with no OMC ones available so had to make one but they're a strange fit in the taper thread shaft... and lets not forget the wheel bearing that collapsed 2 days before that on way to holiday -20 mins into journey, (yep, I'd checked, repacked them and had bearing buddies loaded to the eyeballs with HTB grease...and what fishing trip would be complete without dirty fuel....sorry, I'm ranting now....

I nearly posted a supreme idiot post when I realised I'd not taken out the 2 retaining bolts....(walking around in circles in shame with tail between legs now...)

But they're out and no improvement. Have tried lightly heating - will get a little more agressive tomorrow.

I'm trying to avoid prying out with screwdriver for fear of scoring shaft, but I figure with 30+yrs OMC, Joe must have tried about a hundred other things so his mentioning what I was thinking gives me solace.

Thanks again,
David

Phew,..
got the seals out via Joe's suggestion without scoring shaft.

Made a mess of them but they're out. 2 day wait 'till can buy some more - public holiday...

Going to try the slide hammer idea to get the carrier out - if it comes then will overhaul gearbox, if not, well it can stay entombed forever more.

Man, next motor is gonna have a list a mile long of things to look out for which spell "plenty work" and "$'s". I think the 80's and newer is where I've really got to head. I really am sick of everything about this motor fighting me...lack of maintenance is painfully obvious and I'm well wary now...

Regards
David.
