My lower unit is leaking oil from the prop shaft seal. I have ordered a seal kit from iboats and it's on the way but I was curious about the prop shaft. You can see were the seal has ridden on the shaft. The outer part of the shaft where the seal rides just has a line where the seal has ridden on it, you can't hang a fingernail on it. The inner part of the shaft though has a small amount of pitting. Is there a viable option other than speedi sleeve or welding and re-turning if the seal kit does not solve the problem? Has anyone used JB weld to fill the pits and sanded smooth?

Some machine shops offer flame spraying. It involves machining .010 or more off the surface, and then a metal powder flame sprayer builds up the surface. The surface is then machined to specifications. All of this process is usually done on a lathe, and the results are fantastic.

JB weld is not a good method to build up shafts. It chips off and causes more problems.

Actually, they are pretty forgiving of a bit of groove. It's pretty unusual to find one with no groove at all. It is a judgement call, how deep and how rough.

If you cannot catch a finger nail on the groove, polish the shaft with fine emery cloth and reassemble. You will probably notice the groove disappear after polishing the shaft.

Just gonna cross my fingers and hope for the best with the new seal kit. If needed I'll put a speedi-sleeve in if it doesn't work. Thanks for the help guys.

Just checking back in to say that the seal seemed to solve the problem. Now I gotta get an impellar and do the rest of the seals this winter.
