I am installing a new prop shaft retainer on my 68 chrysler 6.6 hp. The seal goes inside the bearing cage. The problem is that there is a brass bushing that has to be driven out. I was wondering if any of you have had to get this bushing out before and how to do it. Someone told me to use a seal puller and then just drive it out, but I dont have one.

thanks

Re: prop shaft retainer

The bronze bushing is a light interference fit in the gland. So: you take a punch or smaller screwdriver and working around the perimeter, gently drive it out. You may need to have a rather sharp angle to clear the seal or you may need to destroy the seal itself. I forget which way the seal presses in--if it presses in from outside, then just grab it with a heavy needle nose pliers and twist to bend the steel case then pull it out. If it presses in from the bushing side, just drive both out at the same time. Once you do it, you will see that it is not really a difficult job. You don't really need special tools, just creativity.

I have the seal out, but I didnt know how to drive the bushing off to re-install the new seal.

Do I just take a screw driver and drive it out from out around the perimeter. Its a steep angle getting to the edge of that bushing.

so basically, are you saying you just work the screw driver around the perimeter with a hammer?

thanks
