86 Johnson, 28 hp. Any trick to, or advice for, removing the seals from the gearcase head? I realize there's a part # listed for a tool, however the guy at the marina tells me I can probably get them out without the tool. Appreciate any help you can offer.

Hey vann....hop on over to the local NAPA dealer and get a seal remover. It's a tool with a hook on the end. Chuck the carrier up in a vise and pull the seals out......or.....if you can get a screwdrive down through the hole to drive them out, that would save a couple bucks. In any event, you will have to remove the bearing carrier to do the job.

Thanks OBJ. By bearing carrier, I assume you mean the brass sleeve in the fore end of the gearcase head? If so, is there some special trick to removing it? Thanks.

Whoops! My bad Vann......I'm thinking solid gear case not split.

Are we talking about the prop shaft seal or the drive shaft seal that is under the water pump?

If the prop shaft seals are shot, you will have to split the gear case to get to the gear case head assembly. The seals can be knocked out with a screw driver and hammer. The new seals can be pressed in with a socket that will fit. Note how the old seals come out so that the new ones can be replaced the same way. And don't forget to replace the oring on the head assembly as well as the oring spaggetti (sp?) seal between the gear case halves.

Prop shaft seals, OBJ. Got the gearcase split and the new seal kit including o-ring for the gearcase head and the spaghetti seal. Just sure looks like them seals are gonna be a bear to get out.

The head ain't that long and a well placed screw driver should knock them out in short order. Drive them out toward the prop.

Sometimes you need a screwdriver that has been adjusted with a heat wrench. (bent some)

But OBJ is right.Drive them out.Don't forget sealant on the OD of the new seals.

DHP

Re: Prop Shaft Seal Removal

Thanks guys! They didn't want to budge at first, but after giving them a nice long soak to loosen up the gasket sealer, they drove out with a screwdriver without a hitch. Gonna replace the impeller while I've got the old girl apart, and then start putting her back together. Hopefully that'll go smoothly. But if I run into any glitches, hope you don't mind if I come running back here for help. You guys have been great.
