I have a 2000 115hp Johnson 2 stroke that has a bad outer prop shaft seal. How do I get the old seals out? Do I need a puller of some kind?

Some motors allow the seals to be removed/installed w/o pulling the bearing carrier. Not sure about yours. I think special tools are needed for removal and installation.

Yes, you need some kind of puller to get the bearing carrier out. The most important tool is the Factory Service Manual; see your dealer for that.

Yep, takes a special tool. Most if not all good shops have the tool. If it takes them more than 1/2 hour to change the seals something is wrong. Takes as long to pump the lube back in as change the seals. This is one of those jobs that you're probably better off letting a shop do.

If they say the bearibg carrier has to be removed, find a shop who is up to date on tools & training.

To Dhadley: Could you briefly explain the method, Dale? It doesn't take me more than 1/2 hour to pull the carrier and replace the seals, but I'd like to know how to do it more easily if there is a way.

If the carrier comes out it's no big deal but around here that usually means some time with a torch. The seal remover is a large version of the small ones that are used to remove the upper seal on motors with the top seal in the upper bearing housing. To remove the seal you'd have to split the case and slide the upper bearing off the crank.

The remover is a cone with a tapered end that has grooves. The grooves cut into the seal lip. There's a screw in the other end. Once you have the seal gripped you turn the screw in aginst the propshaft. That pulls the cone and seal out.

The installer is like a pipe that goes over the shaft. There's a kit that has different attachments. Pretty slick deal.

Sounds like a "must have" for a good shop and out of reach for me. Thanks for the explanation. I have a very heavy Kukko slide puller that I bought long ago - it has yet to meet its match.
