Prop shaft sleeve material?

The prop shaft on a small engine I have has some pitting where the seal rubs. The guy at the machine shop can drop/put a sleeve on it(shave down the shaft and press a new one to the same size). Question is...can I use 304SS? He was telling me that the prop shaft is a different material cause it's magnetic. SS obviously is not.

There are many different alloys of SS. Some are magnetic and some are not. Some will even rust if not passivated. Some can be heat treated and some can not, one of the main reasons for selecting. I see no harm in what you are proposing.

Certainly it's stainless, just not stainless enough to completely lose it's magnetic properties. There seems to be a threshhold where nickel content nullifies steel's magnetic properties. It just doesn't have quite that much nickel content.
