The only number I can see on my prop is CW 8716.

Would this indicate the size and pitch?

mercury 115 hp, 1988.

The only number under the prop nut is Michigan 030293.

I lightly sanded all the grime and paint away, but cannot see anything else

Someone may be able to tell by those numbers perhaps the Michigan site. I think you may have to have a prop shop measure it for you. What do you have in mind?
If you give us the details on the boat and your max rpm and speed we may be able to ball park a size to get things started. Is the proip al or ss?

Re: prop size #

prop is alumin.

I have a 1988, 115 merc, inline 6. My max. tach reading is 5400 rpm at about 42 mph (gps). It is on a 17 foot Campion ski boat.

I found another number 13R19MWC that was painted over. I believe this is a 19 pitch.

What would be the best pitch for speed, and secondly for all purpose.

Is there a differance between manufacturers ?

Thanks, greatly appreciate it guys.

Re: prop size #

bought a 21 pitch vortex.

Works great, I get 47 mph (gps) at 4900 rpms.

Have to wait and see what happens when water skiing.

Thanks for your help!
