Re: Prop size?????

I think I may have found the cross reference, is it a 15.5 X 19? Does this sound like the correct prop for the boat?
What would the effect be if I went to a smaller diameter prop with the same pitch,
like a 14 X 19 ?
Thanks

Re: Prop size?????

Forget about the Diameter..............
You have Absolutely No Choice in the matter.......

Diameter is determined by the Blade Design,+ Size.....
The People designing the prop figure it out For you............

You decide What Pitch you need.....
Then,
You can pick the metal it's Made of........
You can pick the Style of Prop it is.......
You can pick the Number of Blades it has.......
You can Choose a Manufacturer......
But, the Diameter Really Isn't Up to You..............

The Best thing you can do is,
Go to the top of this page you're reading Now,+ Click on the Big Red "Search" button,+ Type in "Prop"..............
It shouldn't take more than a Few Weeks to digest what you Find............... :D

The one thats on the boat is a 19 pitch , but it is 15" in diameter.

What will the difference be if I switched to the smaller diameter prop? I think your saying they will both be the same? But I do have a choice in diameters. Thanks for your imput.

Re: Prop size?????

darren

you need to do some reading if you have a 15*19 a 12*19 is going to be way to small unless your towing barges

http://www.mercurymarine.com/everything_you_need_to_know_about_propellers5

you dont really dont get to pick the diameter as much as you think the 19in pitch props on this page have diamaters from 14, to a strange 15-3/10 and i can say that each brand will be completly different even if there all 19 in pitch

http://www.iboats.com/mall/propfind...rotation=Standard&year=1995&url_mode=standard

i have a 15*17 and want a littel bigger next one is not 15*18 its 15-1/2*18 dont no why but the prop maker seams to think its best

tommays

Well...........
What that tells Me Is,
You bought a 12"X19" prop for an OutBoard...........
I'm Betting the Hub Diameter is Smaller Too.......

I Forgot to mention..........
You've got to start out looking for Props for your Application..............

Like Bondo says....Mercury props won't cut it, they are for outboards, you need Mercruiser props, and only for Alphas, a Bravo prop won't help a bit.

In case no one mentioned to you, buying from ebay doesn't automatically make things work. Most of the people there are trying to get rid of their junk, and if it's not labled right, you loose. And if you bought a 12" dia. prop for a Mercruiser, you lost!!!!

Don----if you look carefully on ebay, you will save. I have purchased three props there, all new "in the box," plus many other items from liquidators who make warehouse buys and then sell items one at a time.

I have never purchased from anyone with less than 99 percent positive feedback, and I read all the feedback before I bid.

To tell the truth, I do not understand why any boater would ever pay full retail for anything, if they are patient and do their homework.

Darren---I would take the prop you have to a local rebuilder and find out what you have, exactly, and go from there.

This makes all scense in the world but only for off-season. I would rather pay full price and get the item right away, then pay to Ebay seller and wait for item to be shipped. Not to mention the fact that if it is a wrong or bad item, you'll end up paying twice. It is nice for Darren in Cali, but for us on the East Coast season is way too short. Don't get me wrong, I think Ebay is a nice source of parts. I even got a long block from Ebay at the end of last season. (very happy with it). But when time is valuable, I choose fun over savings.

Happy Holidays to All
Lenny

I agree......Yes you can save some money on ebay.
But you have to know what you are looking for exactly, and know when it's not something that you can use. And if you don't know there is a difference between I/O and outboard props, then you leave yourself wide open.

Re: Prop size?????

Lenny---good point about ebay.

My method is to spend the off-season making sure my stuff is not going to break in the middle of use during peak-season. Knock on wood, but I have not had a major break down in peak boating season since my first year of owning my own Mercruiser rig, back in 1990.

I spent six years before that fighting a "family owned" OMC stringer every freeeeking summer, but that is another story.

Darren--welcome to the forum---there is a ton of great information out here!

Why not call 616 452 6941, ask for GREG Verseput, no bull straight answer? They made it. Then take the dinged original to a prop shop and repair for $40? Can't be fixed ? You also have the factory specs. with you.
