I picked up a cheap prop for some tests and there s play in the prop when it s bolted on it slides forward and aft about 1/4 inch, but the splines are ok

I have 17 pitch on now but I got alittle more power :D so I m testin with a 21

merc 3.0 with alpha 1 on a 19' cuddy

Can I just shore it up with a prop washer or just abandon this prop altogether?

You need to verify the prop hardware you're using is comatable with the Merc shaft and the hub in the prop. You might check with the seller to see what he had it on. Without a pic it's hard to "see".

Make sure the forward thrust washer is there and not stuck in the old prop.

Once on make sure the forward edge of the prop doesn't rub on the lower unit housing.

Check the post directly above yours (Imported_Rusty). Just because a prop fits on the shaft does not mean it's right for the application -- and in this case it's either a mismatch, you are missing some hardware, or the prop requires a different thrust washer. Check the prop for Manufacturers name or part number.

Uh-oh, watch out! I switched from a 17 to 21p and my rpm's went waayyyy below the manufacturer's recommended rpm range. You're increasing pitch 4 inches and will lose 800 rpm's. Check your manufacturer's rpm range.

have to check for numbers later, (at work) testing will just be to see if wot is possible, have a 3.0 bored to 30 over not sure about increased power.
