Re: Prop speed
If I understand the conventional wisdom correctly, a cleaver style prop is for running higher on the transom and is less efficient when run deep. Run high, it will tend to cavitate more until it "locks up." So my guess would be the round ear prop would get onto plane faster while the cleaver style would probably deliver higher top speed when it finally locks-up. Depending on the length of the race, it might be a wash between props in short laps while the cleaver style may win the longer races.
I just bought a 21 pitch Chrysler cleaver for my 90 to replace a 21 pitch Chrysler round ear specifically to see if I could get a higher top speed. (both props made by Michigan) Unfortunately, I did not get to test it this year but I will next season. I will post results then. Since I will be comparing the same prop on the same boat and the only variables to change will be the prop and engine height, results should be valid.
